USA takes revenge on Brazil to retain World Grand Prix title

Defending champion the United States took a sweet revenge on eight-time title winner Brazil to retain the trophy at the US$1,740,000 2011 FIVB world Grand Prix concluding here on Sunday.

Losing 3-1 to the world No.1 team in their pool B clash two days ago, the Americans claimed a well-earned 26-24, 25-20 and 25-21 victory to snap an amazing 13-game winning streak of Brazil in this year's World Grand Prix and pocket US$200,000 top prize.

Destinee Hooker, the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix, led the United States with 16 points, with Logan Tom and Jordan Larson adding 14 and 11 respectively.


Russia repeat as world champions

Tokyo, Japan, November 14, 2010 – Led by a tournament equalling game-high 35 points by tournament Most Valuable Player Ekaterina Gamova, Russia won their second straight FIVB Women’s World Championship title by defeating Olympic champions Brazil in a five-set marathon 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11) to win the gold medal in front of a full house of 12,000 fans at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday.

Brazil rout Germany to qualify for semifinals

The powerhouse that is Brazil registered a straight-sets victory (25-16, 25-13, 25-21) over Germany on the third day of second-round Pool F play in the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship at Nippon Gaishi Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Make or break as second round enters second day

Tokyo, Japan, November 7, 2010 – The 2010 FIVB Women's World Championship second round continues on Sunday with the 16 contenders playing the second of their four matches in the quest for a coveted spot in the semifinals.

The top four teams from Pools A and D from the first round have joined together in Pool E, while the top four from Pools B and C are grouped in Pool F. The results from the first round are taken into the second round, so teams will only play sides they did not face in the opening stage.

USA win thriller with Cuba

Matsumoto, Japan, November 3, 2010 – The United States had to dig deep to maintain their unbeaten record in Pool C at the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship on Wednesday, winning a thriller with Cuba 3-1 (30-28, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23). The USA finished with a 5-0 record, dropping only two sets, while the improving Cubans – who had lost their first match to Croatia 3-0 – ended the first round 2-3.
